Qatar

The State of Qatar sits on a peninsula halfway along the western shoreline of the Arabian Gulf and is almost completely surrounded by sea. It borders Saudi Arabia to the south and is separated by the sea from the United Arab Emirates in the southeast and Bahrain in the northwest.
Qatar has a desert climate of hot summers and relatively warm winters. In the summer, the temperature ranges between 25 and 46 degrees centigrade. Rainfall in the winter is minimal and on average does not exceed 75 mm per year.
The Emir H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani is the Head of the State of Qatar. Rule in Qatar is hereditary. H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani is the Heir Apparent.
The economy is supported by Qatar's abundance of oil and natural gas reserves. Currently, there is significant ongoing investment being made to develop the country's infrastructure and economic diversification including the development of Qatar's tourism industry.
Qatar's citizens number around 250,000 and are predominantly Muslim. An expatriate workforce makes up nearly 75% of the country's inhabitants, most of which live and work in the country's capital city, Doha.
Qatar is now a sought-after tourist destination, with many attractions including international five-star hotels, spas and resorts. Its year-round sunshine provides an ideal climate to escape the northern hemisphere winters. Education also attracts many visitors to Doha, with Education City having established campuses of some of the most well-known universities in the world.

AirTran Airways Partners with Major League Slugger Ryan Braun

ORLANDO, Fla., March 27, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ ----- Milwaukee Brewers All-Star Helping Airline Knock High Fares Out of the Park -
AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI: 4.57, -0.11, -2.35%), scored Milwaukee Brewers superstar Ryan Braun, winner of the 2007 National League Rookie of the Year Award, for its Milwaukee sports advertising campaign. Braun will appear in advertisements and make personal appearances on behalf of the airline.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090327/NY89073 )
The endorsement deal with Braun arrives only a couple months after AirTran Airways signed a partnership with the Milwaukee Brewers, which includes naming rights to Miller Park's AirTran Airways Landing Zone, an all-inclusive seating area at the Brewers' home stadium. In the coming weeks, the airline will unveil several billboards in Milwaukee featuring Braun.
"Ryan is considered one of the best young players in baseball today, and we are thrilled to add him to our roster of sports endorsers," said Tad Hutcheson, vice president of marketing and sales for AirTran Airways. "He is a fan favorite in Milwaukee, a market where AirTran Airways recently expanded service by more than 55 percent. Now that AirTran Airways is able to offer travelers even more nonstop flight options, we look forward to partnering with Braun and hitting high fares out of the park for all Milwaukee residents."
Braun is an All-Star left fielder who broke into Major League Baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007. During his award-winning rookie season, he led the National League in slugging percentage. In addition, he received the following awards: the Sporting News National League Rookie of the Year, the Baseball America Rookie of the Year, the Baseball Prospectus Internet Baseball NL Rookie of the Year, and the Players Choice National League Most Outstanding Rookie. Over the past decade, the only other NL hitter to win all five awards was Albert Pujols, who accomplished the feat in 2001. Braun continued his success in 2008, when his home run hit in the final game of the season sent the Brewers to the playoffs for the first time in 26 years.
Braun joins an esteemed group of athletes on AirTran Airways' roster of endorsers, which includes IndyCar racing star Danica Patrick, professional football players Donald Driver and Matt Ryan, and more.
CAA Sports, a division of Creative Artists Agency, a sports and entertainment agency, orchestrated the deal on behalf of Braun.
AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI: 4.57, -0.11, -2.35%), a Fortune 1000 company, is ranked number one in the 2008 Airline Quality Rating study. Airlines offer new frequent-flier promotions

TOMN PARSONS BEST FARES www.bestfares.com
New promotions from three airlines allow frequent fliers to earn double miles toward elite status. Benefits can add up, with free baggage allowance for you and your traveling companions, free space-available upgrades, and priority check-in and boarding. Plus, you can reserve choice seats in the front of coach, in the exit rows and on the aisles.
With these promotions, travelers can earn double the miles they actually fly toward elite status when they travel on paid flights this spring. You won't earn double frequent-flier miles; you'll only accrue miles toward elite status faster.
Fly through June 15 to earn double elite-qualifying miles. The offers are valid for tickets purchased beginning March 18 on American, for travel on American, American Eagle or AmericanConnection; March 19 on United, for travel on United or United Express; and March 20 on Continental, for travel on Continental, Continental Express, Continental Connection or Continental Micronesia. You must register for these promotions before traveling. To do so, access www.aa.com/aadvantage, www.continental.com/onepass or www.united.com/eqmoffer.
To qualify for the first tier of elite status, you need to earn 25,000 miles, so you'll only have to fly 12,500 miles during the promotional period. The first tier of elite status is Gold on American, Silver on Continental and Premier on United.
One round-trip flight to Australia from anywhere in the continental U.S. would earn you enough for elite status. Travel to Sydney has been cheap this year, with recent flights from Dallas for $927 round trip and flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco for $679 round trip.
We've been seeing $500 round-trip flights from Dallas to Europe, which would get you close to the number of miles you need to earn elite status. For example, flights from Dallas to Frankfurt would earn 10,214 miles. If you combine that with a domestic round trip, it should be easy to qualify.
Passengers with elite status who travel two or more times a year can really save on baggage fees, especially if they're traveling with friends or family on the same record.
Once you earn elite status, you will have it for the remainder of 2009 and throughout 2010. On American and Continental, you probably will have it through February 2011, because their elite-program years typically run from March through February.
If you fly short-haul flights, elite travelers can earn a 500-mile minimum, instead of actual miles flown.
On all three carriers, you'll earn a 25 percent bonus on actual miles flown if you qualify for the first tier of elite status and 100 percent bonuses for the higher tiers of elite status.
Keep an eye on these offers to see if they become more competitive. US Airways has a double-elite-miles offer that ends March 31, but that may be extended to match these offers. At press time, Delta and Northwest weren't matching, but they may. They don't want to lose business travelers to other airlines.

United Airlines award for top 10 travel agents

ISLAMABAD (APP): United Airlines has awarded top ten travel agents for promoting the airlines' image and outstanding performance in 2007. United Airlines, an American passenger carrier, has still not initiated its flight operations to or from Pakistan, however; it attracts thousands of Pakistani passengers from its abroad stations especially in Dubai. Addressing the award distribution ceremony, Chief Operating Officer of United Airlines, S.I Mehdi said that the company had established sound footing in the Pakistani market. Therefore, it intends to start flight operations for Pakistan within near future. "This tremendous achievement could become possible due to endeavors and support of travel agents across the metropolitan," he said. United Airlines operates nearly 3,000 flights per day on to more than 200 US domestic and International destinations from its hub in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, he told adding that it has key global air rights in the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and Latin America. Regional Manager North Zahoor Hussain, District Manager Islamabad Syed Nadil Andrabi and other officials also attended the ceremony.

Nod for airline to fly Ipoh-Singapore route

IPOH: The Cabinet has approved the application of a local airline to operate the Ipoh-Singapore sector, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said.
Ong, however, would not disclose the name of the airline until it was certain the company could sustain its services.
He added that the airline would fly from the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport here as plans for a new airport was still far from sight.
“The airline wrote to us and we considered and processed the application with due diligence.
“But at the end of the day, it is their decision to determine whether or not it is sustainable,” he told reporters after meeting Perak MCA grassroots leaders here yesterday.
Ong noted that people had in the past pounced on the ministry and accused it of stopping the services of AirAsia when the airline discontinued its flights from here.
“We did not. That was a business decision,” he said.
“More often than not, people do not seem to understand that the continuity of any air service depends largely on the business decision made by the relevant airlines and not the ministry.
“The ministry has the power to decide or to grant the air rights of any particular sector to an airline but it doesn’t mean that we are there to guarantee them profits.”
On his earlier briefing, the MCA president revealed that many grassroots leaders were very concerned about the process for transforming the party.
Ong said they also discussed the economy and education.
He said special focus was paid to the economic woes of the people and the initiatives that had been and would be taken by the MCA.

HYDERABAD: The airline industry on Sunday made a strong plea to Indian airports to reduce landing, parking and navigation charges, with
a top Jet
Airways officer saying India accounted for only two per cent of global air travel but 30 per cent of the world losses.
Of an estimated USD 8.7 billion global losses, Indian airlines accounted for almost three billion dollars, said Jet Airways Chief Commercial Officer Sudheer Raghavan at the Asian Route Development Forum conference here. "India has two per cent of global air travel, but its airlines account for 30 per cent of the global losses," he said, referring to the "extremely low fares" being charged by Indian carriers last year even when jet fuel prices were rising. Observing that 80 per cent of airport revenues were generated out of aeronautical activities like various airport charges, he made a strong plea for reversing the trend, saying the airports should aim at hiking non-aeronautical revenues, like those from hotels, shopping-malls and other sources, in order to slash the charges for the airlines.

Airline Industry Set for More Consolidation

Airline Industry Set for More Consolidation, Etihad Chief Says
Share Email Print A A A
By Angela Macdonald-Smith
March 29 (Bloomberg) -- The world’s airline industry is heading for more consolidation because of the global recession and drop in air travel, according to the chief executive officer of Etihad Airways, the United Arab Emirates’ state-owned airline.
Combinations such as Air France-KLM Group, Europe’s biggest airline, will probably become more common as companies seek to cut costs, James Hogan said today on Australian Broadcasting Corp.’s Inside Business program. Etihad, based in Abu Dhabi, will seek ways to work more closely with Qantas Airways Ltd., Australia’s largest carrier, he said.
Losses by the global airline industry may total $4.7 billion this year, almost 90 percent higher than previously forecast, the International Air Transport Association said March 24. Air France said March 27 it will have a loss for the year ending March 31, while British Airways Plc, Europe’s third-largest carrier, is forecasting an operating loss of about 150 million pounds ($215 million) for the same period.
“We are already seeing a number of airlines under huge pressure,” Hogan said on the program. “Airlines will have to make decisions as any other business does with regard to their network, their fleet and whether they rationalize, consolidate or continue to invest in expansion.”
Etihad itself is forecasting a 15 percent increase in passenger numbers this year to 7 million as it expands its network to 55 destinations from 50 and adds aircraft, the airline said March 18. The airline is taking market share from the Asian and European hubs, while business within the Gulf region is “still strong,” Hogan said.
Etihad, which starts daily flights from Abu Dhabi to Melbourne today, will still be “under pressure” to achieve its target of becoming profitable in 2010, Hogan said.
“Let’s see how the second half of this year goes,” he said.
Sydney-based Qantas announced a codeshare arrangement with Etihad earlier this month for four Middle East destinations.

Airline industry to lose $4.7 billion in 2009: IATA

GENEVA: World airlines are set to lose $4.7 billion this year as a result of the global recession that has shrunk passenger and cargo demand, industry body IATA said. The International Air Transport Association had estimated in December the industry would lose $2.5 billion in 2009. “The state of the airline industry today is grim. Demand has deteriorated much more rapidly with the economic slowdown than could have been anticipated even a few months ago,” Director-General Giovanni Bisignani said on Tuesday.“The relief of lower fuel prices is overshadowed by falling demand and plummeting revenues. The industry is in intensive care.” IATA, which represents 230 airlines including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, United Airlines, and Emirates, also raised its estimate of international airline losses in 2008 to $8.5 billion, from its previous $8 billion estimate. The Swiss-based body said its latest forecast was based on a view that the economy and air transport demand would hit bottom by mid-2009 and then start to recover. “We do expect better prospects toward the end of this year or the beginning of 2010,” Bisignani told a news conference at Geneva airport.Leading airlines have slashed fares to encourage continued travel and unveiled a range of cost-cutting measures to stay afloat throughout an economic slump.Fares should stay low throughout the year while airlines compete for the business that remains until global economic activity rebounds, Bisignani said. Asia-Pacific carriers will continue to be hardest hit by global economic turmoil and are expected to post losses of $1.7 billion, against the earlier forecast loss of $1.1 billion in 2009, according to the Geneva-based body.Carriers in North America are expected to deliver the ‘best performance’ among the world’s regions with an estimated $100 million profit, IATA said, crediting their strength to early capacity cuts and relatively little fuel hedging that has permitted them to benefit from sliding oil prices. And European carriers are expected to lose $1 billion in 2009 as a result of the recession that will continue to drag down both economy and premium demand worldwide. Nearly 40 airlines worldwide have suspended their operations in the last 15 months because they could not pay their bills, Bisignani said. International passenger demand fell 5.6 percent in January compared to the same month a year ago, and cargo volumes fell 23.2 percent year-on-year, the eighth consecutive month of contraction for cross-border freight. reuters

The Industry Handbook: The Airline Industry

The Industry Handbook: The Airline Industry

Printer friendly version (PDF format)
Few inventions have changed how people live and experience the world as much as the invention of the airplane. During both World Wars, government subsidies and demands for new airplanes vastly improved techniques for their design and construction. Following the World War II, the first commercial airplane routes were set up in Europe. Over time, air travel has become so commonplace that it would be hard to imagine life without it. The airline industry, therefore, certainly has progressed. It has also altered the way in which people live and conduct business by shortening travel time and altering our concept of distance, making it possible for us to visit and conduct business in places once considered remote. (For more on the airline industry, read Is That Airline Ready For Lift-Off?)
The airline industry exists in an intensely competitive market. In recent years, there has been an industry-wide shakedown, which will have far-reaching effects on the industry's trend towards expanding domestic and international services. In the past, the airline industry was at least partly government owned. This is still true in many countries, but in the U.S. all major airlines have come to be privately held. The airline industry can be separated into four categories by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT):
International - 130+ seat planes that have the ability to take passengers just about anywhere in the world. Companies in this category typically have annual revenue of $1 billion or more.
National - Usually these airlines seat 100-150 people and have revenues between $100 million and $1 billion.
Regional - Companies with revenues less than $100 million that focus on short-haul flights.
Cargo - These are airlines generally transport goods. Airport capacity, route structures, technology and costs to lease or buy the physical aircraft are significant in the airline industry. Other large issues are:
Weather - Weather is variable and unpredictable. Extreme heat, cold, fog and snow can shut down airports and cancel flights, which costs an airline money.
Fuel Cost - According to the Air Transportation Association (ATA), fuel is an airline's second largest expense. Fuel makes up a significant portion of an airline's total costs, although efficiency among different carriers can vary widely. Short haul airlines typically get lower fuel efficiency because take-offs and landings consume high amounts of jet fuel.
Labor - According to the ATA, labor is the an airline's No.1 cost; airlines must pay pilots, flight attendants, baggage handlers, dispatchers, customer service and others. Key Ratios/Terms Available Seat Mile = (total # of seats available for transporting passengers) X (# of miles flown during period) Revenue Passenger Mile = (# of revenue-paying passengers) X (# of mile flown during the period) Revenue Per Available Seat Mile = (Revenue) (# of seats available) Air Traffic Liability (ATL): An estimate of the amount of money already received for passenger ticket sales and cargo transportation that is yet to be provided. It is important to find out this figure so you can remove it from quoted revenue figures (unless they specifically state that ATL was excluded). Load Factor: This indicator, compiled monthly by the Air Transport Association (ATA), measures the percentage of available seating capacity that is filled with passengers. Analysts state that once the airline load factor exceeds its break-even point, then more and more revenue will trickle down to the bottom line. Keep in mind that during holidays and summer vacations load factor can be significantly higher, therefore, it is important to compare the figures against the same period from the previous year. Analyst Insight Airlines also earn revenue from transporting cargo, selling frequent flier miles to other companies and up-selling in flight services. But the largest proportion of revenue is derived from regular and business passengers. For this reason, it is important that you take consumer and business confidence into account on top of the regular factors that one should consider like earnings growth and debt load. (For more about the consumer confidence survey, see Economic Indicators: Consumer Confidence Index.) Business travelers are important to airlines because they are more likely to travel several times throughout the year and they tend to purchase the upgraded services that have higher margins for the airline. On the other hand, leisure travelers are less likely to purchase these premium services and are typically very price sensitive. In times of economic uncertainty or sharp decline in consumer confidence, you can expect the number of leisure travelers to decline. It is also important to look at the geographic areas that an airline targets. Obviously, more market share is better for a particular market, but it is also important to stay diversified. Try to find out the destination to which the majority of an airline's flights are traveling. For example, an airline that sends a high number of flights to the Caribbean might see a dramatic drop in profits if the outlook for leisure travelers looks poor. A final key area to keep a close eye on is costs. The airline industry is extremely sensitive to costs such as fuel, labor and borrowing costs. If you notice a trend of rising fuel costs, you should factor that into your analysis of a company. Fuel prices tend to fluctuate on a monthly basis, so paying close attention to these costs is crucial. Porter's 5 Forces Analysis
Threat of New Entrants. At first glance, you might think that the airline industry is pretty tough to break into, but don't be fooled. You'll need to look at whether there are substantial costs to access bank loans and credit. If borrowing is cheap, then the likelihood of more airliners entering the industry is higher. The more new airlines that enter the market, the more saturated it becomes for everyone. Brand name recognition and frequent fliers point also play a role in the airline industry. An airline with a strong brand name and incentives can often lure a customer even if its prices are higher.
Power of Suppliers. The airline supply business is mainly dominated by Boeing and Airbus. For this reason, there isn't a lot of cutthroat competition among suppliers. Also, the likelihood of a supplier integrating vertically isn't very likely. In other words, you probably won't see suppliers starting to offer flight service on top of building airlines.
Power of Buyers. The bargaining power of buyers in the airline industry is quite low. Obviously, there are high costs involved with switching airplanes, but also take a look at the ability to compete on service. Is the seat in one airline more comfortable than another? Probably not unless you are analyzing a luxury liner like the Concord Jet.
Availability of Substitutes. What is the likelihood that someone will drive or take a train to his or her destination? For regional airlines, the threat might be a little higher than international carriers. When determining this you should consider time, money, personal preference and convenience in the air travel industry.
Competitive Rivalry. Highly competitive industries generally earn low returns because the cost of competition is high. This can spell disaster when times get tough in the economy.

Numerous customer benefits available from the start of the summerscheduleWith the introduction of the summer timetable on 29 March 2009, Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines will provide many additional tangible benefits for their joint customers. Besides offering code-share services on cross-border flights between Germany and Belgium and to other destinations in Europe, the two airlines will launch a reciprocal frequent flyer arrangement, allowing members to earn and redeem miles throughout the partner’s network. Moreover, at the start of the summer timetable, Brussels Airlines will move into the same terminal as Lufthansa at Hamburg Airport. From then on, fares offered by both airlines on cross-border flights will be combinable. In other words, passengers in possession of a ticket for a round trip flight between Belgium and Germany will be able to take one flight with Lufthansa and the other with Brussels Airlines. From 29 March, Lufthansa’s and Brussels Airlines’ airport lounges will be open to all passengers travelling Business Class with either carrier. Status customers have enjoyed reciprocal lounge privileges already since February.Codeshare flights on cross-border routes From the end of this week, numerous Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines flights will be operated on a codeshare basis under the partner airline’s flight number. Reservations for these flights can be made as of today. In future, Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines passengers will have access to both airlines’ route networks. Initially, this service will apply to flights between Brussels and Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, Nuremberg and Stuttgart as well as to selected European destinations. At a later date, it will be extended to other flights, particularly to and from Munich. This agreement will benefit customers of both airlines, as it will provide them with greater choice and flexibility. Passengers will, for example, be able to fly from Berlin to Brussels with Lufthansa and return with Brussels Airlines. The two partner carriers will offer nine flights per day on this route.Frequent flyer programme partnershipAt the start of the summer timetable, the two carriers are launching a frequent flyer programme partnership. Brussels Airlines Privilege members will then be able to earn award and status miles on all flights operated by Lufthansa and also redeem any miles accumulated prior to that date for award tickets on Lufthansa flights. Conversely, Lufthansa Miles & More members will have their account credited with all the premium, status and HON Circle miles earned on flights operated by Brussels Airlines and will also be able to book award flights with Brussels Airlines. In addition, status customers of both carriers will enjoy additional privileges such as more generous free baggage allowances and preferential baggage claim. Lufthansa status customers flying with Brussels Airlines will also be able to use Brussels Airlines’ Business Class check-in counters. Likewise, Brussels Airlines’ Platinum and Gold passengers will have access to Lufthansa’s First or Business Class check-in counters.Joint ground operations under one roof Whenever possible, Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines aim to locate their service desks and check-in areas close to one another at airports. At the start of the summer timetable, Brussels Airlines will therefore move into Terminal 2 at Hamburg Airport, where Lufthansa and other Star Alliance partners are located. At a later date, in line with the Star Alliance’s “Under One Roof” strategy, Brussels Airlines plans to relocate to Terminal 2 at Munich, which is used exclusively by Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners. These arrangements will eliminate time-consuming journeys between terminals and offer transfer passengers shorter and improved connecting times. The joint ground operations will be clearly visible for passengers at the airport.Reciprocal lounge privilegesSince mid-February, both airlines have granted their premium customers reciprocal use of the partner’s lounges. Members of Brussels Airlines’ frequent flyer programme Privilege who have attained Platinum status can thus use all Lufthansa Senator and Business Lounges worldwide. Likewise, since February, Lufthansa HON Circle members, Senators and First Class passengers have enjoyed access to Brussels Airlines lounges. In addition, from 29 March, when the summer timetable goes into effect, Business Class passengers flying Brussels Airlines will be able to use all Lufthansa’s Business lounges, while Lufthansa customers will have access to Brussels Airlines’ Business Lounge at Brussels.Brussels Airlines & LufthansaIn the initial phase, Lufthansa is planning to take a 45 per cent stake in Brussels Airlines. This may be increased to a 100 per cent stake at a later date. The transaction is currently undergoing regulatory review by the EU Commission. Meanwhile, Brussels Airlines is making preparations for its entry into the Star Alliance. Many customer benefits have already been realised as a result of the close partnership between Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa.

Airlines shares rose in Wednesday midday trading, as the broader market picked up momentum on a surprise increase in February new home sales and better-than-expected durable goods orders.
Crude oil fell 60 cents a barrel to $53.38 on the New York Mercantile Exchange after the government's weekly inventories report showed more oil on hand than analysts expected. Jet fuel is one of the airlines' biggest costs, but some analysts think prices under $60 a barrel won't seriously affect earnings.

Airlines losses forecast: $4.7 billion loss forecast worldwide in 2009

U.S. carriers expected to earn $100 million profit this year
By Julie Johnsson Tribune reporter
March 25, 2009
Airlines face a global downdraft far worse than the turbulence after the Sept. 11 attacks that sent four major U.S. carriers into bankruptcy, an airline trade group warned Tuesday. The International Air Transport Association predicts airlines worldwide will lose $4.7 billion in 2009 as plunging traffic offsets a deep drop in fuel prices, one of carriers' largest expenses.Industry revenue is expected to fall by 12 percent, to $467 billion, the association said. By contrast, revenue declined 7 percent in the aftermath of the 2001 attacks, which helped push United Airlines, US Airways, Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines into bankruptcy. The shocks to manufacturing and global finance have rippled through business travel, which drives carriers' profit on overseas routes.
Revenue has plunged on flights across the Atlantic and the Pacific as more corporate travelers fly coach—or stay home."The industry is in intensive care," said Giovanni Bisignani, the association's director general and chief executive. "Airlines face two immediate fundamental challenges: conserving cash and carefully matching capacity to demand."U.S. carriers, sent into crisis mode when fuel costs hit the stratosphere last year, may be better poised to ride out the situation. They began to raise cash last summer before financing became difficult and began to cut unprofitable routes last fall to help stem losses.Capacity in the U.S. domestic market is down 9 percent year over year, roughly equivalent to grounding a major airline. Airlines around the globe have trimmed their flying by about 4 percent, according to OAG Aviation, a clearinghouse for airline schedules. The air transport association expects U.S. carriers to deliver the best performance in the world this year, earning a $100 million profit. Asian carriers should fare worst, losing $1.7 billion as once rapidly growing aviation markets in China and India contract.Even so, analysts warn that U.S. carriers such as United and American Airlines that are heavily dependent on business travelers have little cushion to absorb other business shocks, such as a spike in oil prices.
